David S. Kountz, MD, completed his undergraduate education at Princeton University and Medical School at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Following internship, residency, and chief residency in Medicine at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Dr. Kountz joined the faculty at Hahnemann in the Division of General Internal Medicine. During his tenure at Hahnemann (1989-1994) and Temple University School of Medicine (1994-1996) he focused his efforts on health care delivery issues involving medical students and residents in the ambulatory setting. He served as Residency Program Director at Hahnemann and Associate Chief of the Section of General Internal Medicine at Temple, where he also directed the medical clinic.

In 1996 Dr. Kountz was appointed Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Primary Care at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He oversees several primary care faculty practices in the New Brunswick community, medical services at the Somerset County Jail (Somerville, NJ) and serves as Chief of the Primary Care Division, Director of the House Physician Program and Acting Chief for Ambulatory Services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Dr. Kountz’s main research interest is in cardiovascular risk reduction strategies in African Americans, as well as the interface between managed care and medical education. He is presently funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to study diabetes care in managed care settings. He serves on the editorial board of several journals, and is a fellow in the American College of Physicians and the Association for Academic Minority Physicians. In 2002 he was named a Master Educator by UMDNJ.
